Getting Closer

The official sign for Grandma's Attic went up today, very exciting! Although the date says opening May 30th, we are actually trying for Memorial Day week end, which is the week end before, we'll see. Inventory is still coming in, but we are looking pretty good.

We hope to have our course schedule set for the summer/fall and then post it to our web site soon. Keep checking back for more information. We already have a beginners painting class lined up with Greta George, glass etching, and candle making. http://www.grandmas-handmade-crafts.com

We will also be hosting a knit club where you can bring your current project whether it be knitting, sewing or embroidery, along to create while in the company of like minded people in a relaxed, informal and rural setting. Share advice or help others with any hang-ups or techniques regarding your knitting or stitching.

Can't wait!

Earth Hour

Last night at work Jenn and I participated in Earth Hour by switching off many of the lights inside the Inn we work at between 8:30pm and 9:30pm. Unfortunately we couldn't go competely dark at work to show our support, wouldn't want guests falling all over the place. But hopefully you were in the dark where ever you were.

Last year 50 million people switched off their lights for one hour. This year the goal was 1 billion. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Rome's Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Time Square all stood in darkness in support. To see some great pictures of earth in the dark check out this site.

Etsy Shop

My sister in law Charlet, in addition to being an incredible photographer is also quite good at making handmade crafts. She and some of her friends have started an Etsy Shop called The 2nd Floor. Check it out by clicking on the following link.

Hopefully we can convince Chartlet to send us some of her handmade earrings to sell at Grandma's Attic this Summer.

Here is a picture Charlet took of one of her pairs of earrings posted on The 2nd Floor.

Getting Ready for Spring

So with 8 to 10 inches of snow due to fall today, I am thinking about Spring, and have started some seedlings. It may be a little early, but I am hoping to have larger plants to sell at Grandma's Attic this spring not just seedlings for my own personal use.

The seeds are from Seed Savers, mentioned in a previous post.

Here is a good site for information on organic gardening:

http://www.organicgardening.com/feature/0,7518,s1-5-19-212,00.html

This link brings you to a seed starting chart to help you plan when you should be starting your seeds indoors. This is the first year I am following gardening advice I have frequently read, and have started a journal of my day to day gardening activities. So hopefully I can learn from my mistakes next year.

Grandma's Attic

We've finally got some products for sale on our country craft store, Grandma's Attic.

There are some handmade sewing products from Grandma (a.k.a my Mom) and some candles and earrings from me. Here's a photo of one of my recycled "can"dles.
Keep checking back to see what else is new, or browse the rest of the site for some great crafting ideas.

Look for our retail store opening soon in Bartlett NH.

Recycled Plant Container

Trying to save my poor aloe plant, I decided a transplant was in order, however, I didn't have any plant pots on hand. No problem, there was an entire recycle bin full of plastic containers.

With an appropriate size selected, a quick rinse, a few holes poked in the bottom with scissors, a little dirt and I was in business.

The container cover makes an excellent base to catch any excess water. Not that I am prone to overwatering my plants or anything :)

With temps in the 40's this week, I am definitely thinking about Spring and all the planting that comes with it. My selections are made from the seed catalog and the order is soon to be placed. I think I'll start saving more plastic containers now for future use as recycled plant pots. One less thing going to the dump!!!

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Don't take your old jars to the dump, recycle them at home and save yourself some money.

Old glass jars can be reused to make your own candles. Tin cans work very well too. The reflection of the candle light off the inside of the can makes a soft relaxing glow that is twice as enjoyable knowing you are doing your part to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Want to know how to make your own candles, check out our site:

http://www.grandmas-handmade-crafts.com/handmade-jar-candles.html

You can reuse even more by remelting the remainder of old candles into one or more rainbow colored homemade recycled "can"dles.

Mary Jane Farm Magazine

My Mom brought me a great magazine she found while visiting Craft Stores around our area.

Mary Janes Farm: Full of wonderful information including recipes, organic living ideas and more.

The web site http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/magazine.html?ck=RTI6-iY1AT6yVOor&vid=RTI6-iY1AYKyVPOe&cktime=79142 is mostly a store site where you can purchase anything from food to household needs. But the magazine is really great.

Seed Savers Exchange

http://www.seedsavers.org If you are already thinking about next years garden like I am check out this site for the seed savers exchange. You can become a member for only $35 a year and have access to some unique varieties of plants and vegetable seeds handed down through the generations from our ancestors.

Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit organization that saves and shares the heirloom seeds, forming a living legacy that can be passed down through generations. When people grow and save seeds, they join an ancient tradition as stewards, nurturing our diverse, fragile, genetic and cultural heritage.

Heirloom vegetable is a cultivator that was commonly grown during earlier periods in human history, but which is not used in modern large-scale agriculture. Many heirloom vegetables have kept their traits through open pollination, while fruit varieties such as apples have been propagated over the centuries through grafts and cuttings.

Craft Fairs

Well, our last craft fair is coming up this week end. Saturday Dec. 13, we will be at my work. There is a craft fair in what use to be the Eastern Mountain Sports retail space to benefit the Conway Area Humane Society.

Here is a picture taken at the Craft Fair at the North Conway Community Center. We have also attended the craft fairs at New Suncook School, and Bartlett Elementary School.

Attending Craft Fairs has been interesting, we have gotten a chance to meet a lot of fellow crafters and have handed out lots of business cards to some of the many at home crafters in the North Conway/Fryeburg area.
